What Frank Lampard has said about his Coventry City future amid Rangers talk - Doug King will love it

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard has opened up on speculation linking him to the vacant job at Rangers, a club which he holds close to his heart, although the ex-Chelsea and Everton chief's admission will please all at the CBS Arena.

The Sky Blues have enjoyed a blistering start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign under Lampard, continuing the positive upwards trajectory directed last season following his appointment back in November 2024 as Mark Robins' successor.

Coventry made amends for inconsistent early-season form to make it into the top-six before crashing out of the play-off semi-finals against Sunderland in dramatic fashion as Dan Ballard's last-grasp header denied them a potential trip to Wembley, although they have suffered no such hangover in the aftermath and appear poised to make a strong claim for promotion to the Premier League this term.

Indeed, Lampard's side are the only team to remain undefeated in the second-tier after nine matches, with emphatic recent thrashings of Birmingham City, Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday prior to the October international break sending City to the top of the league table with an almighty goal difference of 20+.

In light of such formidable form at both ends of the pitch, then, it should perhaps come as no surprise that Lampard's future has become the subject of speculation, and he has been among the litany of bosses linked with the vacant Rangers post after the sacking of former Swansea City and Southampton manager Russell Martin.

However, Lampard has underlined his commitment to staying put in the West Midlands in spite of an admission of love towards the Scottish giants, which will represent a huge boost to everybody connected with Coventry.

Speaking ahead of Coventry's return to action against Blackburn Rovers tomorrow afternoon, Lampard was quizzed on the links and whether they have impacted him in any way.

But, much to the relief of Sky Blues supporters, the 47-year-old squashed any fears of a departure to Rangers or other clubs, too, doubling down on his determination to "drive" his ambitions at Coventry to the end of the campaign and explaining just how happy he is at the CBS Arena right now.

Lampard told the press: "No, I just feel very happy with where I’m working and what I’m doing, and the fact that we’re top of the league and I want to continue.

“I’m very, very ambitious and when I say that I’m talking about being here. I want us to be better. I think we’ve improved a lot. Everyone in the building works really hard to get to where we are.

"There’s a real joy in that when you come to work and you have that feeling and I want to continue that and drive it and drive it.

“I’m going to drive up until January and I’m going to drive until the end of the season.

"I’m very happy here, so I feel nothing of it.

"And I love Rangers Football Club. I grew up loving Rangers Football Club. Those rumours are just there. I’m very happy here, and I want to continue to do better."

Doug King will love Frank Lampard's Coventry City, Rangers admission

This is huge news for Coventry, who may not have been sweating all that much over Lampard's immediate future considering the position in which the club finds itself in at the minute. However, supporters, players and staff alike will nonetheless share a collective sense of relief to hear Lampard put any lingering rumours to bed and make no secret of his commitment to the cause with the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Owner Doug King will be particularly relieved, as he has already seen vindication for his initially-contentious decision to displace the long-serving Robins with the former Chelsea and England sensation, and will know that if any manager is capable of guiding Coventry back to the big time, it's likely to be Lampard.

His project and vision is something which everybody at Coventry has brought into, and King will know that his ambitions for City to gain promotion to, and consolidate, at Premier League level may just be in safe hands under Lampard.
