Albion boss sends clear message to international managers over player fitness

But he stopped short of identifying who meant as he assessed his Albion squad ahead of the Newcastle game.

The head coach said not all national set-ups were totally professional in how they used their squads.

His comments might cause concern among fans that a player has picked up some sort of issue ahead of the return to Prem action.

Hurzeler confirmed Diego Gomez is being assessed due to a thigh problem sustained playing for Paraguay against South Korea.

But the midfielder has not been ruled out of the Toon game.

Although he did not divulge any other new injuries as things stand, Hurzeler was clearly unhappy at events involving at least one of his internationals.

He said: “I think it is important that internally we address it.

“I think every country has a responsibility for the players as well.

“Of course they always want to play the best players.

“I think they also have to take care of the health of the players.

“If we give our players in good health to them, it’s our expectation that we get them back in a good shape.

“That is just a general thing.

I mention here that Hürzeler has always been supportive of Baleba. I still think he is being supportive - but in a different way! #bhafc pic.twitter.com/VKwZOWZ8zQ

“But I think we address it to the persons who are responsible and hope they improve it.”

Albion had a host of players away on international duty, some in important World Cup qualifiers and some in dead rubbers or friendlies.

Brajan Geuda and Kaoru Miroma withdrew from international games due to injury and with consultation between Albion and their national FAs.

Hurzeler said: “Some injuries at the moment are quite unlucky. I think also that the national teams have a responsibility with how they send the players back and unfortunately not every country did in a 100% professional way.

“We have to deal with it. We have to find solutions for it.”

Gruda misses the Newcastle game but is expected to be back in time for next weekend’s trip to Manchester United.
