Ruben Amorim "doesn't know" how long it will take for Manchester United to compete with Liverpool in the Premier League.
Liverpool have won two Premier League titles since United were last crowned champions of England. Jurgen Klopp was the first to lead Liverpool back to the summit of English football and he also oversaw their Champions League success in 2019.
In the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era United have won the FA Cup (twice), League Cup (twice) and Europa League. United will return from the international break against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend and Amorim was asked whether the game is a chance to show the gap between the two clubs is closing.
"That I don't know. Sometimes things change really fast, but if you see the history of both clubs, you can feel sometimes a club is winning, winning, winning, and the other club is having a bad moment.," he said.
"That happened with Liverpool when Manchester United were winning everything. And that happened to Manchester United when Liverpool was winning everything.
"We have to acknowledge that, be really honest with the fans, but we can win any game, so if we think about just winning the next game, which is the most important thing, then we can win the next game.
"If we are going to fight and be at the same level of Liverpool in the future, that is the idea. I don't know how long it's going to take."
Amorim secured a 2-2 draw when United visited Merseyside in January, and he reflected on that result, saying: "I remember we play well, it was a draw, I was really upset at the end of the game.
"We prove at the end we can compete against any opponent. I know it is special for our club. I know they are competing for our number of titles. It is one game we need to prove again we are playing better. We need to be better in both boxes."
Speaking about securing results against the top teams, Amorim said: "Maybe the expectations, when you have to win and the responsibility of winning it is so much harder.
"When you play in big clubs you need to win every game. We have difficulties sometimes to play with that. Maybe when Manchester United are not expected to win, it is easier for the players to perform, but we need to change that."
