Foden was the best player in the world for his age - now he is nowhere near England squad

Phil Foden has been told what he must do to regain his place in the England squad.

The Manchester City midfielder has not played for the Three Lions since March, missing their last six matches.

With Thomas Tuchel's side now qualified for next summer's World Cup, Foden faces a race to return to the side by the end of the season.

Having made his debut aged 20 five years ago, the six-time Premier League winner has already won 45 caps for England.

Across those matches, Foden has scored four goals and added nine assists as well as playing at the last three major tournaments.

However, he asked to be left out by Tuchel in June after battling off-field issues throughout last season.

Foden was then ruled out in September with an ankle injury before an almost identical squad for this month's matches left him out in the cold again.

Gabby Agbonlahor believes the 25-year-old could remain absent from the squad unless he recaptures his best form.

Prior to last summer's Euros, Foden was named the PFA Players' Player of the Year after a stellar season for City.

However, he has scored just once in five Premier League appearances so far this term.

What does Foden need to do?

Agbonlahor believes this has left him down the pecking order for an attacking midfield berth ahead of the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

The talkSPORT co-host told Breakfast: "Five games for Phil Foden, one goal this season.

"He needs to get the form back from 2023/24 where he got 19 Premier League goals, eight assists in 35 appearances.

"Get that Phil Foden back, he's got every chance. But on current form I don't think he makes the squad. Sorry Phil.

"I think (Cole) Palmer gets the call before Foden. There's so many options.

"You look at the left hand side, you've got (Marcus) Rashford, (Anthony) Gordon, (Eberechi) Eze, (Jack) Grealish as well trying to get in that side.

"Right hand side you've got (Jarrod) Bowen, (Bukayo) Saka and (Noni) Madueke."

At just 25, Foden has already made 327 appearances for City, scoring 102 goals and providing 63 assists.

However, Agbonlahor is adamant he cannot rely on his previous performances to keep him in the national team.

The former Aston Villa striker added: "He can't be living off two seasons ago. Last season was poor as well.

"So he's got to get back to two seasons ago and then maybe he's got a chance."

Foden was 'best in the world'

Foden's fall from being one of the first names on the teamsheet for England has come as a surprise to many fans and pundits.

Amongst them is former England youth team coach Ian Foster, who was in the role when the Three Lions won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

Steve Cooper's side eight years ago included several future senior internationals including Marc Guehi, Jadon Sancho and Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, it was Foden who stood out from the rest of the players Foster worked with.

Asked which Young Lions he knew would be stars, Foster told Hawksbee & Baker: "Foden without a shadow (of a doubt). Even though I can beat him in two-touch.

"You know sometimes when you see them playing in age group football, Foden, in my opinion, was the best player in the world at his age.

"I think we sometimes turn our backs on the fact that if you look at his CV and look at the trophies he's won, he's born in 2000, so he's 25 now.

"He's got an incredible amount of trophies and he's a lovely kid. He's so, so talented.

"He's versatile, so he's worth his weight in gold in tournament football because he can play centrally, he's an advanced number eight and he can play off the side.

"He's so intelligent tactically that he'll know how to affect the game. So if you don't go with perhaps a Saka or a Gordon or a Rashford off the side, Phil can do that one as well."

Foden has already won 17 trophies with boyhood club City since making his first-team debut less than a month after the Under-17 World Cup final.

His silverware haul includes a treble and the Club World Cup along with his six Premier League winners' medals.

Despite not being in Tuchel's most recent squads, Foden will still have the chance to regain his place before the World Cup.
