Matt Law shares Chelsea stadium plan update with meeting now planned

The speculation around Chelsea expanding Stamford Bridge or moving to a brand new stadium has existed for ages now, so the fanbase would appreciate a definitive answer on the next step.

Chelsea have called Stamford Bridge their home since 1905, the year they were founded.

Although the 40,173-seater stadium has incredible history and memories, it’s relatively small in comparison to the other giant clubs in English football.

Apparently, Chelsea’s Earls Court plan could cost £1-2bn, with co-owner Todd Boehly favouring a move to a new postcode and a capacity of around 60,000. The alternative mooted is to stay at Stamford Bridge and expand to a 55,000-seater ground.

Matt Law gives update on Chelsea stadium plan

Journalist Matt Law has provided an update regarding Chelsea and their potential stadium move, which includes imminent discussions next month.

Speaking on the London Is Blue Podcast, Law explained: “I had thought at one stage, that there was a chance that in November, we would know whether the Earls Court development site would still be open to Chelsea or not. Having investigated a little bit and not fully, because we’re still a few weeks away from it, I don’t quite need to yet. But having investigated a little bit, I don’t think it is going to be a meeting that finalizes everything on it.

“You’ve got to remember that I still think the plans are plans that can be amended even if they go through. So even if the full planning permission and full plans were put through, I think they are still plans that are allowed to be amended. So look, it could move on a little bit.

“Don’t get me wrong. It could take a step further towards the Earl’s Court development as it is becoming what it is. But I don’t think it will be locked in in November.

“But there is a meeting in November, which Chelsea will definitely be sort of keeping an eye on and which has, let’s say some significance. But I don’t think it’s going to decide anything from what I gather.”

Elsewhere, it was claimed that Chelsea are more likely to stay at Stamford Bridge and redevelop. Let’s hope that a final decision is made so action can begin as soon as possible.

If the Blues want to keep up with the elite clubs, they can make a real step with more revenue and a larger stadium.

Chelsea’s record at Stamford Bridge

We’ve seen in the past that Chelsea can make their home ground a real fortress. Between 2004 and 2008 the Blues went on a remarkable 86-game unbeaten run in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho in charge as the manager for 60 of them.

Last season, Enzo Maresca’s side had a decent record at home.
