Aston Villa are poised to secure the services of the player for longer following interest from Premier League rivals

Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last four league games and started to hit some form before the international break. They are positioned in 13th place in the Premier League and will be looking to rise up the league over the coming weeks. The Midlands outfit won 2-1 at home to Burnley last time out after a brace by attacker Donyell Malen.

They are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Tottenham Hotspur as they look to keep their momentum going. Unai Emery’s side should be in confident mood as they prepare for their journey down to London on Sunday. Their upcoming opponents are positioned in 3rd in the table behind Arsenal and Liverpool.

Aston Villa close to John McGinn contract breakthrough

Aston Villa are ‘close’ to securing a new deal for John McGinn, according to The Telegraph. The report claims that Everton, Newcastle United and West Ham were interested in signing him over the summer. His contract expires in June 2027.

McGinn, 30, is a Scotland international with 80 caps under his belt for his country so far to date. He made the switch to Villa Park back in 2018 and has since been a great servant to his current club. The Glasgow-born man has made 295 appearances in all competitions, 10 of which have come this season, and he has scored 33 goals.

He rose up through the ranks at St Mirren and broke into their first-team as a youngster after graduating from their academy. Hibernian then came calling in 2015 and he became a key player for the Edinburgh side during his three years at Easter Road. Aston Villa then lured him down the border and he hasn’t looked back since.

Aston Villa poised for John McGinn boost

Keeping hold of McGinn will be a very shrewd bit of business by Aston Villa. He has made an impressive start to this campaign and is one of their most prized assets. The Scotsman injects valuable experience into their squad and is a useful person to have in and around the dressing room and is getting more experienced with every passing year

Losing him to a team in the same division like Everton, Newcastle and West Ham in the last transfer window would have been a big blow. He has recently said in an interview that he believes he can continue improving: “It's gone quickly, but I think what it means for me is that it shows the progression of the club - it hasn't stood still.

“I've managed to go along with the club and improved. I still feel like I'm improving. I will now always have the challenge that now I'm 30 - can I keep doing it and can I keep going? But I feel good and I'm enjoying playing here. European nights at Villa Park ... it is surreal when you think about it.

“It has been a long time here. You never know, maybe a few years more, but that's up to the club."
