‘He is unbelievable’ - Brighton wary of ‘special’ Newcastle United player

Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade has enjoyed a fine start to life at St James’ Park.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler believes Nick Woltemade has all the tools to become a Premier League success.

A stellar start to St James’ Park life has already banished the noise surrounding Alexander Isak’s exit. Woltemade has four goals from five starts and to quickly become the new cult hero on Tyneside.

The 23-year-old followed his recent goal flurry with a maiden goal for Germany in midweek. A tough test awaits Woltemade tomorrow as Newcastle United aim for a first away win over Brighton since 2017.

Fabrian Hurzeler on Nick Woltemade

Ahead of the clash, Seagulls boss Hurzeler is proud of his compatriot for a solid start in the Premier League - but does not want him to continue that golden streak this weekend. He told reporters: “I have known him for a long time. My assistant coach, Daniel, worked with him. I was already interested in his development. He is something special, how he plays for his height.

“He is very tall but still has an unbelievable technical execution in tight spaces. How he used his body is very impressive. He has all the things you need to survive in the Premier League.

”I can speak from experience, it’s tough. For new players coming from a different league, how fast he’s done it is impressive. It shows his quality. It will be a big challenge to face him tomorrow. As a German, I am very pleased for him. Tomorrow he can stop scoring - and then I’ll wish him all the best!”

‘Similar to us’ - Fabian Hurzeler

Hurzeler also believes Newcastle's current league position - 11th - is misleading. He added: “They have been similar to us. Very positive performances but they might deserve more points. Against Arsenal, when they played at home, they looked like a winner for the whole duration of the game.

“But you see how competitive and unpredictable the Premier League is. The small margins are important. We know Newcastle are a top team so we have to keep our standards really high.”

‘I feel good’ - Nick Woltemade

Speaking to the BBC after Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest last weekend, Woltemade opened up about how his new manager has helped him settle at the club. He said: “He (Howe) makes me feel good. I have one-on-one conversations with him every day. They are mostly about topics that have nothing to do with football. Like my move, or how my family is doing.

“It is a great working culture here. When you score as a striker on the pitch the feeling is really good. But also outside (of football), I feel really good. The gaffer is such a good gaffer. I’ve only been here for four weeks but I feel such a good connection.”
