“When you have a Ferrari in the garage, you just need to start up the engine and go out and have some fun,” Abdul-Aziz said.

Abdul-Aziz might be best compared to the reliability of a Lexus, as he made the 45th start of his career Thursday evening.

And that duo terrorized Vista del Lago’s defense, as the Coyotes pulled away for a 38-14 victory in an Ivy League showdown.

Abdul-Aziz completed 27 of 32 passes for a career-best 402 yards and three touchdown and also ran in another score.

Washington finished with seven receptions for 170 yards — many of those coming after the catch — and had two touchdowns.

“We came in with a goal of starting out strong because we didn’t have that last week,” Abdul-Aziz said, referring to last week’s 22-21, come-from-behind win over Liberty. “It’s amazing watching our receivers go to work, whether that’s catching the ball or blocking for each other. I just have to get them the ball and watch what they can do.”

Abdul-Aziz needs only 29 more yards to become the fourth quarterback in Inland Empire history to reach 10,000 in a career.

“It is starting to become surreal as I get closer to that number,” Abdul-Aziz said. “There were a lot of doubters when I was freshman. But I’ve put in a lot of work over the years, and I’m honored to have been the quarterback here for four seasons.”

Orange Vista (5-3 overall, 3-0 in league) grabbed the lead 3 1/2 minutes into the game, as Bobby Greer scored on a 8-yard run. The Coyotes doubled up 4 minutes later when Abdul-Aziz tossed a 3-yard touchdown to Traycee Washington.

The damage could have been worse for Vista del Lago, but Sekona Manu stuffed Greer in the backfield on fourth down and prevented a third touchdown for the Coyotes. And then the Ravens (5-3, 1-2) pieced together a 19-play, 90-yard scoring drive to get right back into the game. Josiah Dupree-Boyd capped the long possession with a 1-yard keeper.

Orange Vista turned the ball over on the ensuing drive, and Vista del Lago again capitalized. Dupree-Boyd fired a 34-yard pass to Malik Ogeare, and Dupree-Boyd’s second scoring run of the night brought the Ravens even at 14 in the final minute of the half.

Abdul-Aziz made sure Orange Vista went into halftime with the lead, however. With only 30 seconds to work with, he completed passes of 23, 17 and 20 yards in quick succession. Anthony Lopez drilled a 40-yard field goal for the Coyotes as time expired.

Orange Vista squandered an opportunity to deliver an early knockout blow but certainly didn’t miss when give a second chance.

“We’re three-time defending champions, so we expect to get everyone’s best game,” Orange Vista coach Shawn Fleming said. “So the message we had at halftime was to regroup and come out in the second half and show the exactly what we can do.”

Vista del Lago opened the second half with a 48-yard pass from Dupree-Boyd to Jae’lynn Brown. But the drive stalled and came to abrupt end when Frankie Gonzalez stopped Dupree-Boyd a yard short of the line to gain on fourth-and-2.

Zayshawn Washington then delivered the most memorable play of the game. On third-and-15, Washington caught a pass from Abdul-Aziz, and then turned upfield and zig-zagged his way through defenders 63 yards for a touchdown.

“I was trying to analyze the defense and see what they were giving me,” Washington said. “They gave me what I was looking for,, so I took advantage of that. It’s great knowing all that work is helping me create those big plays.”

Abdul-Aziz threw another touchdown pass to Washington in the third quarter and added a 10-yard scoring run in the fourth.

“I think everything is starting to click right now,” Fleming said about the team’s five-game winning streak after losing three straight to begin the season. “We’re getting healthy and starting to see how scary we can be as a team.”

Dupree-Boyd completed 12 of 21 passes for 191 yards and added 51 yards on the ground to lead the way for Vista del Lago. Brown finished with a game-high eight catches for 135 yards for the Ravens.
