The curious case of former Philadelphia Eagles and current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz is in full swing as the veteran is now preparing for his fourth start in the 2025 season.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell officially named Wentz the starter for their Week 7 game against the Eagles. Max Brosmer will be his backup, and season-opening starter J.J. McCarthy will be the emergency third string.
While Wentz's past with the Eagles has left fans with mixed feelings looking back on his time in Philadelphia, it's clear to say the 2016 first-round pick is making up for last time.
Wentz has a chance to truly get his revenge on the Eagles
Wentz has spent the last several years jumping from team to team, not being viewed as a consistent starter since 2022 with the Washington Commanders. Between stints with the Rams (2023) and the Chiefs (2024), Wentz's career has been in limbo long since the 2017 season, in which a torn ACL seemingly ruined his potential MVP season.
Fast forward to the 2025 NFL season, Wentz enters his third season of backup QB purgatory. His fifth season removed from being the Eagles franchise quarterback, however, after three starts with his new team in as many years, Wentz has settled into his new role, leading the Vikings to a 2-1 record, throwing for 759 yards along with five touchdowns.
With Wentz starting, it will be his second matchup against his former team after facing them with Washington in 2022. Wentz went 25 of 43 for 211 yards, zero touchdowns with zero interceptions, and was sacked 9 times with one lost fumble as the Commanders lost to the Eagles 24-8. With so much history between the organization and Wentz, the possibility of him delivering a win for Minnesota at the expense of Philadelphia is must-watch TV.
Wentz's 2025 season is drawing several similarities to the Eagles' 2017 Super Bowl season. A team with playoff expectations has its second-year first-round pick quarterback get injured. It now turns to the experienced backup QB several years removed from being a starter, in hopes of making a push for a championship.

While the NFL season is only in Week 7, it is not out of line to think that another strong performance by Wentz, leading to a Vikings victory, could change the trajectory of his career, which is now entering its back end. Wentz has been in the NFL for 10 seasons and now could be considered in Andy Dalton's "status" as a proven/vested veteran backup. With another strong performance, especially against the team that "scorned" him, Wentz could find himself extending his career for several more years, with possibly the chance of becoming a bridge starter before calling it quits.
