Andy’s Player Ratings: Safc U21s 2-1 Colchester U21s – Abdullahi Stars As Young Mackems Win

Had to deal with some physical play in the first half and coped with them well, made a few good saves that you’d expect him to make but then spoiled his night a little after he dawdled on the ball and sold his defender short, with Colchester scoring the resultant penalty.

Defended well down his side of the pitch, although there was not a lot of wing play from the visitors.

Had been defending well and standing up to some rough stuff from the visitors but unfortunately got himself sent off early in the second half.

A mature performance at the back and didn’t bat an eyelid when his centre back partner got a red card.

Got himself forward quite often in the first half, with one effort after a mazy run going just wide, but then defended well after the break when we were down a man.

Some good link up play in midfield, especially when around the opposition box. Did miss a bit of a sitter when he fired well over the bar but put a good shift in following the red.

Was a good link between the defence and attack before the break and then a good defensive effort after the break.

Was lively in and around the Colchester box, got himself an assist with a cut back to Abdullahi on the edge of the box but was sacrificed for a defender when Kindon got sent off.

Steady enough display in midfield but not as eye catching as he was during his previous spell with the under 21s last season.

Full of running down both wings in either half but didn’t have his shooting boots on tonight, could easily have got on the scoresheet with a bit more composure.

Scored two goals, both well taken finishes. One with a nice curling effort after playing a one-two with Whittaker and then using his pace to get away from the defence and finish into the corner.

Came on to give us another man at the back after Kindon was sent off.

Looked lively after his introduction and forced a good save from the goalkeeper after Abdullahi set him up.

Came on late for the tiring Tutierov.

Man of the Match: Ahmed Abdullahi

Abdullahi was the match winner tonight but he was also the best player on the pitch. Used his pace effectively all night to cause Colchester constant problems but then also dropped deep to become a playmaker and at one point played a quality outside of the boot pass to set Tutierov away on goal. Scored both goals himself with two good finishes, made chances for his teammates and could and probably should have left with the match ball.
