Nik Bonitto calls Giants fan base ‘delusional’ in since-deleted social-media post

Nik Bonitto got in on the social-media chatter blooming in the wake of Jonathon Cooper’s comments about New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart — comments that seemed relatively harmless, but still raised eyebrows in some circles.

But Bonitto’s missive Thursday afternoon left the New York Giants’ fan base ablaze.

“I’ve never seen such [a] delusional fan base,” Bonitto posted at his account on the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Bonitto subsequently deleted it, but as we all know, screen captures linger.

“Damn, Nik Bonitto deleted that delusional fan base tweet already?” posted Art Stapleton, Giants beat writer for The (Bergen County, N.J.) Record

Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux chimed in:

BONITTO’S COMMENTS FOLLOWED JONATHON COOPER’S THOUGHTS ON DART

A day earlier, Bonitto’s edge-rushing complement, Jonathon Cooper, was asked about Dart and spoke about the rookie quarterback’s chain and noted at the close of his comment, “ain’t nothing we haven’t seen.”

But in terms of Dart not being anything new to the Broncos defense, Cooper was specifically noting Dart’s ability to scramble and move around the pocket. The Broncos have faced a handful of mobile quarterbacks this season, including Tennessee’s Cam Ward, Indianapolis’ Daniel Jones, Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields of the New York Jets.

As ever, context is key.

Here is the full text of what Cooper said when asked about Dart:

“Yeah, I mean, he’s a young guy. He’s feeling himself a little bit. He’s out there running around, he’s got the chain on, he’s dancing. I feel like everybody needs something, so. But we’ve went against QBs who have ran around in the pocket and have tried to do stuff with their legs, so, ain’t nothing we haven’t seen.”

Not exactly the most inflammatory of comments.

But that led Stapleton to post this on Thursday morning:

The mere mention of Jaxson Dart’s necklace shows you he’s getting under opposing players’ skin already. Trying to belittle his play by talking like this.

Dart and the Giants need to answer with their play Sunday https://t.co/iTlL2ITb19

And with that, Big Blue Nation had a viral comment. Had Bonitto not chimed in on the conversation, the tempest would have remained in the proverbial teapot. Instead, it took on new life.

All matters will be settled Sunday.
