West Ham need 33-year-old fringe man, he must start against Brentford - opinion

West Ham United have endured a torrid start to the new Premier League season, winning only one of their first seven games so far.

The Hammers have replaced Graham Potter with Nuno Espirito Santo as manager, with the London club sitting in 19th place on the Premier League table.

West Ham signed Mateus Fernandes over the summer in a bid to add creativity to their ranks, but goals are an issue for the Irons.

The London Stadium outfit have only scored six goals so far this season, with only bottom team Wolves and struggling Nottingham Forest netting fewer.

As such, West Ham must turn to an ageing fringe man for the upcoming clash with Brentford on Monday night.

Callum Wilson the best Nuno has

Germany international Niclas Fullkrug has been leading the line for West Ham this season, but has failed to score in six Premier League outings.

With the former Borussia Dortmund striker now injured, the Hammers will need to turn to veteran Callum Wilson against Brentford.

The 33-year-old joined West Ham over the summer after being released by Newcastle and has scored once so far this term.

Wilson has a proven Premier League pedigree and despite his age could be the man to fire the Hammers out of the bottom three.

West Ham must invest in a new striker

Despite the presence of Fullkrug and Wilson, and the promise of young Northern Irish striker Callum Marshall, West Ham are in dire need of attacking reinforcements.

The London club have been overly reliant on the goals of Jarrod Bowen for too long and an injury to the England international would be catastrophic for the Irons.

Wilson can do a job for Nuno’s men and score the goals in the short term that West Ham need to climb the table.

But the West Ham board need to be realistic and reinforce the side’s attacking options come January to avoid the club being drawn into a relegation fight this season.
