Arne Slot Believes Man United Are In A False Position In The League Table

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot claims that Man United have had a “better start” to the season than their current league position suggests.

Heading into Sunday’s clash at Anfield, Ruben Amorim’s side sit 10th in the table after 7 matches played, and speaking about the fixture this weekend, Slot said that his team will need to be at the top of their game:

“We know that it’s probably the game that’s been watched the most all over the world. It’s special to be part of it, but in the end it’s also a game where we have to be at our best, because United, in my opinion, has had a better start of the season than maybe the league table is showing.”

Slot is clearly not underestimating his opponents, who secured a 2-2 draw in the corresponding fixture last season.

Have Man United’s performances deserved better results?

If we look at the underlying numbers, Slot does have a point. United’s expected goals figure totals 14.1, which is the highest of any team in the Premier League after 7 matches. They have only scored 9, which suggests their finishing leaves a lot to be desired.

Opta’s expected points table also places them in 4th place, six places higher than their current position. Again, that can be mostly attributed to the team underperforming in the final third of the pitch.

What are the odds of a United win this weekend?

The Red Devils are still very much the underdogs heading into Sunday evening’s game against Slot’s team. The bookmakers have priced them at between 18/5 and 4/1 to get the three points.

A draw has similar odds of around 7/2, while a victory for Liverpool is the most likely outcome, with the Reds odds-on at every single betting firm.
