Daniel Farke has told Karl Darlow he has a chance of usurping Lucas Perri as the number one goalkeeper at Leeds United, following his impressive displays.

Perri was brought in as the new number one over the summer amid his £15m move from Lyon but has not played since August due to a quad injury. The Brazilian is back in training but not ready to play, meaning Darlow will begin a fifth straight Leeds match.

“There is no guaranteed place in the starting line-up for any player,” said Farke when quizzed about his goalkeeper pecking order. “It could be the top signing for an unbelievable amount of money. It could be the captain, the goalkeeper, the main striker.

“Because what guarantees your place in a starting lineup is just performances in the games and on the training pitch. Each and every week you have to earn the rights again.

“For me, the goalkeeper position is a bit special. He is a bit like a lone rider and it's him against the world. It's also important for the players around him - centre backs, full backs, holding midfielders - to have clarity which type of player is there.

“This is also a reason I don't like to switch too much from week to week and speak about there being an open competition or something like this.

“In terms of goalkeepers, I like more clarity, especially for them, but also especially for the outfield players. This is [why] the beginning of the week [is] when I speak to who will play on the weekend.”
