Alan Shearer agrees with Paul Merson on ‘tough’ Newcastle United vs Brighton prediction

Newcastle United travel to Brighton in the Premier League this weekend.

Newcastle United visit a tricky hunting ground this weekend aiming to make it three wins on the bounce across all competitions.

The Magpies have not beaten Brighton away from home since 2017 when Mo Diame’s fluke and a late Ayoze Perez winner snatched a smash-and-grab victory. However, the Seagulls have proven somewhat of a bogey team for the Magpies ever since.

Brighton won twice at St James’ Park last season, with Newcastle rescuing a late point at the Amex in the reverse fixture. That 89th-minute penalty proved to be Alexander Isak’s last goal in black-and-white stripes.

The pundits are all singing off the same hymn sheet ahead of tomorrow’s clash. NewcastleWorld has profiled how Alan Shearer - among others - expect the game to pan out.

Alan Shearer

“This should be a good game,” he told Betfair. “From my memory, there's always goals here. I remember Evan Ferguson getting a hat-trick a couple of years ago. I'll go for a draw here.”

Prediction: Draw

Paul Merson

“Brighton have turned a corner now,” he wrote in his SportsKeeda column. “I would say Newcastle are also starting to find a bit of rhythm. I thought Arsenal destroyed Newcastle even though it was just 2-1. But they have bounced back quite well after that loss, scoring six goals and conceding none in the next two games since then.

“Nick Woltemade has done really well at Newcastle. It was an absolutely unbelievable penalty from him against Forest last time out. If you put the ball in the box, he will score goals. It's as simple as that. Woltemade's a big lad, a real handful and he couldn't have started any better in my opinion. When you go to a club like Newcastle, you have to start well and he has settled in quicker than snow!

“This will be a decent game to watch because Brighton have managed to get some results in really difficult games recently. I feel these two teams are very similar to each other. So it's tough to pick a clear winner here.”

Prediction: Brighton 2-2 Newcastle United

“I was impressed by Newcastle when I watched them against Forest,” he told BBC Sport. “Their midfield is so powerful, and they have got good options out wide. I don't think they will start firing properly up front until Yoane Wissa is fit to help Nick Woltemade but, defensively, they look pretty solid and that has been backed up by their results on the road.

“Newcastle have drawn all three of their away games in the league this season, without scoring or conceding. The goals will come, but I don't see them as having enough to beat a Brighton team who always look dangerous even when they are not playing that well. The Seagulls have drawn two out of three at home so far, so I guess this has got a draw written all over it, too.”

Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Newcastle United
