Manchester United’s biggest ever win at Anfield
Manchester United’s biggest ever away win over Liverpool came way back in 1969, when Wilf McGuinness was manager.
McGuinness managed United between 1969 and 1970 before being replaced by the man he took over from, Sir Matt Busby.
He had a win percentage of just 36 per cent, making him United’s worst ever post-war manager. Ruben Amorim is currently running him close at just 38 per cent.

McGuinness’ United team ran out 4-1 winners over Bill Shankly’s Liverpool at the time, with club legend Sir Bobby Charlton putting the finishing touches on the victory.
Charlton was involved in all four of United’s goals to lead an away win in front of a 47,000-strong crowd.

Manchester United’s biggest Premier League era wins at Anfield
Manchester United’s two biggest wins of the Premier League era at Anfield more predictably came under Sir Alex Ferguson.
They both came in 1997, with two matches ending in 3-1 away victories for Manchester United.
The first was at the end of the 1996/97 season, with centre-back Gary Pallister becoming an unlikely hero with two goals. Andy Cole scored the third.
Then in December 1997, Andy Cole netted a brace to lead another 3-1 win at Anfield, with a young David Beckham also on the scoresheet.
Manchester United’s last win at Anfield
The post Sir Alex Ferguson years have not been kind to Manchester United in general, and especially not at Anfield, despite the two recent draws.
Manchester United have not won away at Liverpool since January 17, 2016 under Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.
Wayne Rooney scored the 78th minute winner in the 1-0 win. It was the second time he had scored a winner at Anfield, having also done so in 2005.
Manchester United XI: David de Gea, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney.
Three Manchester United players have scored at Anfield since 2016
United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool in January 2025 saw the Red Devils end a streak since 2018 of even failing to score at Anfield.
Amad and Lisandro Martinez scored the goals for Manchester United, ending the scoring drought.
Jesse Lingard had scored United’s goal in 2018 in a 3-1 defeat that preceded Jose Mourinho being fired.
