Eddie Howe believes Newcastle United got a huge bargain when they signed Dan Burn from Brighton for £13m.

Burn was settled in Brighton but when Newcastle came calling in January 2022, the Blyth-born defender could not pass up the opportunity of joining his boyhood club.

And what Burn has gone to achieve on Tyneside is a remarkable tale, leading Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to admit that he was worth £30million, rather than the £13m fee he joined for.

Dan Burn’s remarkable Newcastle United tale

The 33-year-old quickly established himself as a leader inside the Magpies’ dressing room, first helping Howe’s side to fight off Premier League relegation before a year later qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 21 years.

Burn’s opening 18 months also saw Newcastle reach their first cup final in 24 years and while they lost 2-0 to Manchester United that day, the team returned to Wembley in March for the Carabao Cup with Burn scoring the opener in a 2-1 win over Liverpool that ended the club’s 70-year domestic trophy drought.

Less than a week after the final, Burn then made his England debut and has since established himself as a regular pick of Thomas Tuchel’s. And he is again playing in the Champions League for the second time in three years, having last time scored in the famous 4-1 win versus Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United secured bargain Dan Burn transfer

Ahead of Burn’s visit to his former club, Howe was asked if he agreed that Burn was worth every penny of his £13m transfer fee.

But the Magpies’ head coach misheard the price tag as £30m before admitting that Burn was indeed worth that.

Howe said: “I thought you said £30m then, so that's why I hesitated! I was like, ‘gosh, that's lumpy’. £13m, did you say?

“He genuinely probably was [worth £30m]. When you look at value for money and what he's given the club, absolutely he has been.

“But at the time when we signed Dan, that was a key signing. We needed someone who could bring leadership and experience to the back line, winning mentality, etc.

“We were in a relegation battle. We needed players who then wanted to come and of course, Dan had links to the area and links to the club and wanted to come home. So it turned out to be an amazing transfer.

“And as you say, he's been worth every penny and some more for what he's given and what he continues to give. He's a really inspiring character. I love the fact he's been rewarded on the international stage.

“It's great to see a good person and a good character be rewarded in that way. And yeah, now he's got to keep going and he's got to keep seeing what else he can achieve here.”
