Brighton to be given January transfer chance – Months after €35m Seagulls offer floated

Brighton & Hove Albion were among the clubs who had interest in Lazio’s Mario Gila last summer.

Back in May, Corriere dello Sport reported Brighton were prepared to pay €35m for the centre-back. Lazio, on the other hand, had reportedly demanded €50m to sanction a sale.

Fast forward to October and the Italian media again talks about Brighton’s offer for Gil.

Il Messaggero, relayed by La Lazio Siamo Noi, covers the Seagulls’ summer interest and the 25-year-old’s current situation.

It’s claimed the Spaniard’s entourage had brought a €35m bid from the Seagulls in June and Lazio president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Mariano Fabiani rejected it. Chelsea and Como had also looked at the defender at that time.

The Italian club signed him in 2022 from Real Madrid, who retain a 50% sell-on clause.

Gila has a contract expiring in 2027 and the Serie A side intend to extend it. It’s claimed the Biancocelesti have already held talks with his representatives, but that hasn’t resulted in a renewal agreement.

Therefore, Il Messaggero report Lazio should sell him in January, to avoid risk of letting Gil enter his final year of contract.

Without a renewal, Brighton could be given a second chance to sign Gila in the winter market, months after making an offer.
