Long-term Newcastle United target refusing to sign new contract and will switch clubs next…

Newcastle United could be involved in a melee to sign one of England's top defenders next summer when his current contract expires.

Marc Guehi almost joined Liverpool in the summer but time ran out and the deal was scrapped.

A year previously, Newcastle had been locked in talks all summer long with Crystal Palace, who led the Magpies on a merry dance before making it clear that Guehi was not for sale.

It was reported this summer that Newcastle were still keen on the England international, but no move was made by Newcastle, leaving the door open for Liverpool.

Oliver Glasner has said Marc Guehi will not sign a new deal at Crystal Palace

Now, Crystal Palace manager, Oliver Glasner has confirmed that Guehi has told the club he won't sign a new contract and will leave the club next year.

“Marc has already told us that he [won’t] sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'No, I want to make something different'. And that's normal.”

There's a chance that Palace may move to sell Guehi in January, but it seems more likely that clubs will wait until the summer and try their luck at scooping him up for free.

We can't see Marc Guehi going anywhere but Liverpool

Whether or not Newcastle will be involved in that scramble remains to be seen. Our feeling is that Guehi will move to Liverpool after coming so close in the summer. He seemed keen on the move, and unless something changes between now and then, we can see that being his destination.

Newcastle brought in Malick Thiaw this summer, who is looking like an absolute bargain already, so a new centre-back isn't a big priority, and the wages Guehi is likely to demand will make the move less appealing.

Picking up Guehi for free would be that big middle finger to Crystal Palace co-owner Steve Parish, who played Newcastle for fools last year, but we're not convinced that being petty is enough of a reason to get involved. He can go to Liverpool for us; we're happy with Thiaw and Sven Botman.
