The latest transfer reports and rumours for Aston Villa and Wolves this weekend

The summer transfer window brought plenty of exciting deals and even more rumours as the Premier League set a new spending record over a rollercoaster period.

Celtic transfer for John McGinn ‘cannot be ruled out’

After ongoing contract uncertainty, Aston Villa are set to offer John McGinn a new contract to extend his time at the club. However, there is the call of another club that could ‘pull on his heartstrings’ in the future.

There is a strong Celtic connection within the McGinn family and the Aston Villa star could be tempted to move there, having come close before his move to the Premier League in 2018.

The Scottish powerhouses had almost signed McGinn from rivals Hibs, before Villa swooped in to get the deal done eight years ago. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, the temptation of Celtic lingers but it will be ‘surprising’ if it happens any time soon.

“It could happen in the future, there’s no doubt about that. There are strong links between John McGinn and Celtic. I think his granddad was Celtic chairman at one point as well. Got to remember, he came very close to moving to Celtic before he joined Villa in 2018,” O’Rourke said.

“There’s a deep connection between John McGinn and Celtic, but I don’t think John McGinn will be considering a move back up to Scotland any time soon.

“You can never rule out a move in the future. I’m sure it’s a move that might pull on his heartstrings in the future.”

Wolves January transfer claim made

It’s been far from the ideal start to the season for Wolves, who are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table with just two points on the board.

Frustrations have been rising among the fanbase, especially after losing key players like Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to league rivals over the summer.

The Mail recently opened the floor to questions from fans recently about Wolves’ form and potential transfer strategy for the new year. The club signed the likes of Jorgen Strand Larsen and Jhon Arias over the summer.

While questions around relegation and the manager were popular, one fan asked whether Wolves will spend much money once the January transfer window opens for business.

“Not significantly, unless they are forced to,” reporter Tom Collomosse responded. “Spending rules are a constant headache for the majority of the Premier League and Wolves are no different.

“The perception that Wolves do not spend on players is flawed. The problem is where and how they spend it. If we include the £23m paid to Celta Vigo to make Strand Larsen’s loan move permanent, Wolves committed more than £120m on new players last summer, after spending £108m across the 2024-25 season. They just need a few more of these transfers to work out.”
