After playing just 17 games for the San Antonio Spurs since being traded from the Sacramento Kings, star De'Aaron Fox has a lot to prove this season. Especially true after he received a max contract from the Spurs over the summer.
Fox has become something of an afterthought given how stacked the league is at point guard, with him even coming in at [28th in a recent Ringer player ranking](https://nbarankings.theringer.com/).
Nevertheless, his skill set and physical tools could help him and the Spurs reach a higher level. In fact, Fox was just voted the fastest player in the NBA [in a recent NBA GM survey](https://www.nba.com/news/2025-26-nba-gm-survey), illustrating his potential.
NBA GMs nail the reason De’Aaron Fox is perfect for Wembanyama
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Being the fastest player in the NBA should make Fox a nightmare to defend as a member of the Spurs. Particularly in the pick-and-roll when paired with star Victor Wembanyama. After all, teams are wary about leaving Wembanyama open at the top of the 3-point line, where he takes many of his threes.
That would make it difficult to trap Fox with Wembanyama spacing the floor, and Fox has no problem blowing by big men to get to the rim. Put decent spacing around those two, i.e., Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Harrison Barnes, and that two-man game could be nasty to deal with.
This is especially true if Wembanyama does not limit himself to being just a pop threat. His rolling to the basket could throw defenses into a panic, with him being the biggest of lob threats—literally.
Fox and Wembanyama will serve as the Spurs' backbone
-------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully, Fox and Wembanyama will soon prove to be the backbone of a dominant Spurs offense, much like Tony Parker and Tim Duncan were during the early to mid 2010s. If that is the case, then they could conceivably be a top 10 offense and a top five defense in the near future.
That would put them in the thick of the playoff race every single year. Fox is key to that, with the Spurs needing a reliable second option. If he can average around 22 points and 6 assists, then he can be a fantastic second option.
One who can take pressure off Wembanyama. That would make him worth his max contract and help the Spurs emerge as contenders.
Fox ultimately has the physical tools and skills needed to help him thrive in San Antonio, with him being the perfect co-star for Wembanyama. San Antonio certainly hopes so after giving him a max contract. And if he continues to play like he did during his best years in Sacramento, then he could more than live up to that deal
