New York Knicks Star Shares How He Used to Get Clothes From 'Church Donations'

Long before his designer-clad pregame looks, Karl-Anthony Towns' style started from humble roots.

While fans and the media see him as a powerhouse on the court with effortlessly cool personal style off it, the New York Knicks star has had an unexpected journey behind his style evolution.

During his interview with Hypebeast, the NBA star revealed that growing up, he didn't have many options to explore trends, let alone develop his own style.

Back then, his family was going through tough financial times and often depended on donated clothes and thrift finds.

"For me, my fashion journey…It wasn't about money, I never had it," he said, adding, "I used to get my clothes on from the church donations and Ross and Goodwill and stuff like that."

Moreover, he added that his love for wide-leg pants and oversized outfits came from practicality.

"I think it's been my fashion style," Towns shared. "Kind of living off the emphasis of ‘I'll fit into the clothes later,'" he explained, adding that he often bought clothes three sizes bigger to avoid spending too much money on them.

The Knicks forward-center also shared that his part-time job at a flea market helped him express his creativity and shape his sense of style.

"I'm working on Sundays at the flea market in Jersey," he recalled and noted how he "used to find some really cool gems" from ‘90s classic brands like Fubu, Mitchell & Ness, and Marc Ecko, where he would score Len Bias jerseys and Wu-Tang-inspired clothes.

The five-time All-Star said he enjoyed "growing up in that era of fashion," where he could freely express himself through what he wore.

On Instagram, he often showcases his tunnel fits, which lean toward street style and casual looks but with a modern edge. He often struts in hoodies, head-to-toe denim looks and interesting layering pieces.

Moreover, he enjoys collecting designer items such as his Louis Vuitton Large Monogram Suitcase, a furry Balenciaga coat and his Goyard Steamer PM Backpack, among other luxury staples.

On the court, he also sports cool footwear like custom or player-exclusive Nike shoes, but unfortunately, unlike fellow NBA stars, he hasn't received a signature line of his own.
