Report: Nottingham Forest now considering manager Evangelos Marinakis compared to Brian Clough

Ange Postecoglou oversaw eight games at Nottingham Forest and failed to record a single win.

A 3-0 defeat against Chelsea at the City Ground earlier on Saturday piled an enormous amount of pressure on the man born in Nea Filadelfeia.

The 60-year-old has already been dismissed as a result of the dismal run.

Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

The Club will make no further comment at this time.

Before Nottingham Forest even kicked off against Chelsea, a post from BBC Sport claimed that Evangelos Marinakis is giving consideration to rehiring Steve Cooper as a replacement for Ange Postecoglou.

Nottingham Forest considering Steve Cooper

The 58-year-old is remarkably thinking about bringing the Welshman back to the City Ground.

Cooper – who took over at Brondby in September – was sacked by Marinakis back in December 2023 with Nottingham Forest sitting 17th in the Premier League and on a run of just one win in 13 league games.

Despite that, the BBC believe rehiring the 45-year-old is an option being considered internally at the City Ground.

Evangelos Marinakis has compared Steve Cooper to the legendary Brian Clough

Despite handing the man born in Pontypridd his P45 back in December 2023, Marinakis – who also likes Marco Silva – has a lot of admiration for him.

The Nottingham Forest owner even compared Cooper to Brian Clough when he managed to steer the Reds to promotion back in May 2022 with a Championship play-off final win over Huddersfield.

Gazzetta quoted Marinakis as saying: “I told the fans earlier that I respect and appreciate Brian Clough for what he did. It was unreal in England, combined with winning the Champions League, but 42 years ago. We are talking about a different world now, with much more competitive, bigger teams. What Steve achieved is just as great, it could be even greater if we take into account today’s conditions and the current level of football.”

Clough remarkably won 13 trophies at Nottingham Forest – including two European Cups – so it truly does speak volumes that Marinakis put Cooper on a pedestal alongside the City Ground legend.

First Division: 1977/78

League Cup: 1977/78, 1978/79, 1988/89, 1989/90

Full Members Cup: 1988/89, 1991/92

FA Charity Shield: 1978

European Cup: 1978/79, 1979/80

European Super Cup: 1979

Anglo-Scottish Cup: 1976/77

Football League Centenary Tournament: 1988

Cooper – who Mikel Arteta respects – has, however, signed a contract with Brondby which runs until July 2028, so Marinakis would have to pay a compensation fee if he does intend to replace Postecoglou with the promotion winner.
