Pittsburgh Steelers coach tabbed as head coaching candidate for Titans job

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is an early candidate for the open Tennessee Titans job, according to multiple reports.

Smith, who was the offensive coordinator for the team for two seasons before being hired as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, coached with the Titans as a position coach, working his way up to offensive coordinator for nearly a decade.

The strong start to the Steelers’ season offensively with Aaron Rodgers helping push the offense forward, including a 31-point outing against the Cincinnati Bengals, has revitalized some buzz around Smith’s name in league circles. Now, he could land an interview with the Titans.

Some others who will be considered is Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, and Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Smith is the one with the most direct connection to the Titans organization. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Smith’s rise in Tennessee was no coincidence.

Meanwhile, he also turned down the North Carolina head coaching job a year ago before the school settled on Bill Belichick. Smith went to North Carolina, but turned down his alma mater after boosters and the school approached him to take on the job.

In the past, Smith has noted that he would only leave the Steelers offensive coordinator gig for the right job, and his familiarity with Tennessee could make that gig the right one with a young quarterback in Cam Ward they are hoping to develop.
