Everton player ratings as Man City difference in class proves painful for 4/10 Blues star

Everton put up stubborn resistance to keep Manchester City frustrated for almost an hour but Erling Haaland’s quickfire double [condemned them to defeat at the Etihad Stadium](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-everton-live-stream-32701032) and left David Moyes’ men ruing their missed chances in the first half.

Beto twice should have done better when fed by Ndiaye – although his second opportunity was ruled offside – while the Senegal international himself had an effort tipped over by Gianluigi Donnarumma before the Norwegian took charge after the break. Heading City in front on 59 minutes from Nico O’Reilly’s left wing cross, he then swept a finish past Pickford to seal the three points on 63 minutes having been fed by Savinho to keep up the Blues’ miserable record against Pep Guardiola.

**Jordan Pickford 6**

Will be disappointed to have been beaten by Erling Haaland’s header which was the Norwegian’s first chance of the match, having stood up well to deny Jeremy Doku just before the break and twice denying Savinho, but there was little he could do about the second.

**Jake O’Brien 6**

Rattled his own crossbar with a header under pressure from Erling Haaland, having had his hands full up against the tricky Jeremy Doku and couldn’t get close enough to Savinho when setting up a clinching quickfire second goal for the hosts.

**Vitalii Mykolenko 6**

He didn’t have many opportunities to get forward and while the Ukraine international can often do his best work when he’s purely got his defensive head on, having kept tabs on Savinho and company for almost an hour, his backline couldn’t hold out .

**James Tarkowski 6**

The shot for Haaland’s second went through his legs just five minutes after the prolific striker had got between Everton’s centre-backs to open the scoring, he put in some robust challenges and typically brave defending.

**Michael Keane 6**

Like Tarkowski, he’ll be frustrated with how Haaland got between them to break the deadlock after what had been an assured display, making a crucial block to deny Tijjani Reijnders.

**Idrissa Gueye 6**

Helped Senegal to the World Cup finals this week – along with Ndiaye – but despite all his travelling and international action, the 36-year-old continues to be an energetic presence in the engine room.

**James Garner 6**

Put his body on the line with a big challenge early on to put a marker down on Phil Foden and produced an industrious display, although like many of his team-mates, faded once City went ahead.

**Iliman Ndiaye 7**

The best player on the pitch in the first half before Haaland took over, producing two big chances that Beto should have done better with a low cross and then a threaded pass before dancing his way through City’s defence and forcing Donnarumma to tip his dipping effort over the bar.

**Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 5**

Returning to the side following his one-match suspension after five yellow cards, he had to undergo some early treatment after going down hurt and while he was fit to continue, he was often on the periphery of the action.

**Charly Alcaraz 5**

Handed a start following his impressive second half substitute display against Crystal Palace, albeit on the left wing rather than a central role, he was neat and tidy but far less effective out wide and got hooked.

**Beto 4**

The difference in class between the two centre-forwards proved the difference here as he had two inviting chance to put Everton ahead from Ndiaye’s passes, the first low delivery across the face of goal but couldn’t make a clean connection, while secondly he dragged his shot wide before the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside.

**Substitutes**

**Tim Iroegbunam (on 70 for Gueye) 6**

Couldn’t find a way back in.

**Merlin Rohl (on 70 for Alcaraz) 6**

Ditto.

**Thierno Barry (on 75 for Beto)**

Continues to share the striker duties but not much of note.

**Dwight McNeil (on 86 for Dewsbury-Hall)**

Late cameo.

**Tyler Dibling (on 86 for Ndiaye)**

Same.
