The Las Vegas Raiders are set to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in a Week 7 game that the team desperately needs to win to keep pace in the AFC West division. However, in the eyes of former Raiders wide receiver turned NFL media personality James Jones, that task will be easier said than done with how well Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is playing.
After a slow start to the season that saw the Chiefs lose their first two games, Mahomes has hit his stride, throwing for over 250 yards in each of their last three games.
Given the fact that Kansas City’s already dynamic offense is set to get even more dangerous in Week 7, as wide receiver Rashee Rice will be returning from his six-game suspension, it will certainly be a difficult task for the Raiders to slow down Mahomes.
This led Jones, who appeared on the Raiders Podcast Network on Thursday, to share a warning with his former team about what they can expect facing off against Mahomes on Sunday.
"I see a quarterback in Patrick Mahomes playing his best football probably in the last couple years to be honest with you," said Jones. "Even though they still have been in Super Bowls and they've been winning a lot of football games, the last two years, Patrick Mahomes has not played lights out and played extremely good football.
"You turn on the tape on Patrick Mahomes this year and Patrick Mahomes is back to Patrick Mahomes. He is playing lights out. He's making plays with his arms; he's getting outside the pocket. He's making plays with his legs; he's rushing [for] touchdowns; he's making everybody on the field better. What we're used to seeing. Him and Andy Reid, we all know, and Travis Kelce is going to be a tough outing for our defense.”
The Raiders’ defense has allowed the 10th-most points to opposing teams thus far this season. Going up against someone like Mahomes, who appears to be in rhythm, could very well be a recipe for disaster for Las Vegas.
It will take an inspired effort from the Raiders’ defense to come away with a Week 7 upset win. Especially when you consider the fact that they are going into the game banged up on the offensive side of the ball, with Brock Bowers officially being ruled as doubtful to play in the game and Jakobi Meyers being listed as questionable.
