All in or hold steady? Our thoughts for the Lions’ ahead of the trade deadline

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are about to hit the bye week, and on top of that, the trade deadline is a little more than three weeks away.

We covered some trade offers ESPN wants to see the Lions make ahead of the deadline. And let’s just say that they want to see the Lions go all the way in.

MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast opened the mailbag for reader-submitted questions this week. Hosts Kory Woods and Ben Raven tackled the topic and tried to paint a picture of the team’s potential desires.

Defensive backs make a ton of sense, even with reinforcements expected to be on the way at some point. And, go figure, edge rushers were at the top of mind for both hosts. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was back at practice this week. He’s targeting a potential return in the first game after the bye against the Minnesota Vikings. D.J. Reed remains on injured reserve for another two games, while Marcus Davenport is still a couple of weeks away.

ESPN had the Lions going in for two big-time edge rushers, and Woods and Raven discussed whether they see general manager Brad Holmes trading away valuable picks or not.

“At what point do you go from drafting, period, to build your foundation or to going for it all?” Raven questioned. “I’m not that saying they’re already not going for it all, but like, if you trade for someone like Trey Hendrickson or Jaelan Phillips, you’re going for it (in the short term)."

Raven made the point that Holmes has been a fantastic drafter, and has managed to find instant an instant contributor or two (or three) even as the Lions pick further down the board. When Holmes was in Los Angeles, general manager Les Snead started going for it all, trading away picks for veterans, to boost the team’s Super Bowl chances.

We’ve wondered if that turn was coming through the last five seasons here in Detroit. For now, it would represent quite the shift in team-building if the Lions took that route.
