At 0-6, most people would assume the New York Jets would be sellers at the NFL trade deadline.
However, according to NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the green and white have been making trade calls trying to find a “kick returner.”
Interesting Strategy by the Jets in 2025
You’d think the Jets would be trying to add draft assets, not trying to shed them.
However, it’s worth noting that the Jets went against that strategy earlier this season. An opportunity presented itself to acquire a 24-year-old cornerback for peanuts.
The Jets struck a trade with the Tennessee Titans, sending off a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for Jarvis Brownlee Jr and a 2026 seventh-round pick.
The moral of the story is you always have to be open for business because you never know when a good deal can present itself.
Jets Have Had Kick Returner Issues This Season
You can point to a pair of games on the Jets’ schedule this season that were lost due to special teams miscues.
In Week 1, wide receiver Xavier Gipson fumbled a kickoff in the second half that was cashed in by the Pittsburgh Steelers for a touchdown.
It happened again in Week 4, this time by wide receiver Isaiah Williams. He coughed up a fumble on a second-half kickoff that was also cashed in for a touchdown by the Miami Dolphins.
In both games, the Jets lost by a single score.
Things Dramatically Improved in Week 6
The Jets continued their losing ways in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, but it certainly wasn’t the fault of the special teams’ unit.
Former All-Pro return man Kene Nwangwu returned to the lineup for the first time since the season opener, and his impact was felt immediately.
Nwangwu had three returns for 113 total yards. He averaged an impressive 37.7 yards per return, and his longest of the day was a 72-yarder.
Williams also contributed with two returns for 59 total yards. He averaged a solid 29.5 yards per return.
Considering the recent success, it is surprising that the Jets are seeking other return men on the trade market.
Insider Provides Scoop on Jets Trade Calls
NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed that, “The Jets are already getting calls on defensive end Jermaine Johnson and running back Breece Hall.”
Johnson has two years remaining on his rookie contract, and Hall is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
An anonymous NFL general manager told NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY on “Jets Mailbag” that he would give up a third-round pick for Johnson in a potential trade. He said if he was “very very very desperate,” maybe he could be convinced into giving up a second-round pick.

On “Jets Final Drive,” Hughes revealed from his sources that Hall could command a fifth-round pick. If multiple teams get into a bidding war, maybe that could elevate to a fourth-round pick, Hughes explained on the show.
The Jets lack depth at both running back and defensive end, which likely only complicates these conversations ahead of the Tuesday, November 4 NFL trade deadline.
