Newcastle United were beaten 2-1 by Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium in the Premier League.
Dropped points, late goals and a lack of cutting edge or creativity. The tale of Newcastle United’s Premier League season so far isn’t a pretty one.
Like Liverpool and Arsenal before it, the Magpies again let more top flight points slip as Danny Welbeck - aye, him again - popped up with a late winner to ensure Eddie Howe & Co suffered their third defeat in what has been a challenging campaign. Welbeck had opened the scoring, before NUFC’s man of the moment Nick Woltemade popped up with another quite brilliant goal to draw them level with time ticking away.
But, as has so often been the case, they let another game slip from their grasp.
And the United goalscorer did not mince his words in assessment of what he saw as an under par performance.
‘We didn’t do good’ - Nick Woltemade’s verdict
Speaking in the aftermath of the loss Woltemade said: “It's not good. First half, we didn't do good. The second half was good energy in the game. We scored one goal and it felt like we would win but they played good and scored. That's football sometimes. The second half was way better than the first.
“I really like to play here. I get balls; the players are looking for me. The gaffer trusts me.
“In the second half, we had good chances but we lost them in the first half. We didn't have good energy. It's part of football when the ball doesn't want to go in, but it's important we keep working on that.”
While Newcastle have been indifferent this season, Woltemade has been anything but. Since arriving he’s got five in six starts in total, four of which have come in the Premier League. And he quite brilliantly added the latest addition to his collection on the south coast, with a deft flick through the legs.
He added: “Before the national break, we had a good week and today you can see that we can get the game on our side in away games. We will keep working and win games away.”
