The Dallas Cowboys are likely to be busy ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline. The team’s defense is severely struggling, and more is needed on that front. However, an anonymous NFL general manager has urged the team to target a bizarre position instead.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic broke down plenty of reports indicating which NFL teams are targeting what position to bolster their rosters. While it is no secret that the Cowboys will be “open for business,” Russini also indicated that an anonymous general manager told her Dallas should aim for a player in their backfield.
“The Cowboys have let the league know they are open for business. They are looking for defensive help, but one GM argued, ‘They actually should go get a running back.'”
What makes this request odd is that the Cowboys have a solid run game. Javonte Williams has 476 yards and three touchdowns, with a 5.3 yards per carry average. Miles Sanders was placed on IR, but the team still has Jaydon Blue and Malik Davis.
The bizarre nature of targeting a running back is that the Cowboys have a far more glaring issue on the defensive side of the ball. The team is giving up an NFL-worst 411.7 yards per game. This also includes an NFL-worst 269.5 passing yards per game to opposing offenses.
Dallas clearly needs more pass rush and cornerback help. This is especially true with Trevon Diggs suffering a mysterious concussion. DaRon Bland has also not stepped up, giving up a 68.0 completion percentage and 116.7 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks.
After shockingly trading away Micah Parsons, the pass rush for the Cowboys is also lacking. The team could be getting DeMarvion Overshown back in November, but the team needs more firepower on the defensive line.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones should bolster the defense if the team wants any shot at hanging with the competitive teams in the NFC. Adding a running back at the right price wouldn’t be a bad idea, but choosing to target that position over defense is just a head-scratching proposition.
