Morehead State University names stadium after former alum and NFL legend

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WSAZ) - Morehead State University (MSU) honors alum Phil Simms during their 2025 Homecoming.

The University named their stadium the Phil Simms Stadium and held a dedication ceremony Saturday afternoon.

During the dedication ceremony, Director of Athletics Kelly Wells introduced Simms by saying, “Few people, if anyone, have brought as much recognition to Morehead State University as Phil Simms.”

“If I had to name my 10 to 15 closest friends in life, they would all be from here,” Simms said. “I can never get the words that really capture everything I want you to know... I’m a part of Morehead State, the school, the town and of course the football team.”

Simms graduated from Morehead State University in 2015.

Over the years, Simms has hosted youth football campus, mentored players and coaches, and has supported fundraising efforts for the Eagles football programs.

Simms returned back to MSU in 2015 to complete his degree. The school also gave him an honorary doctorate.

“Phil Simms embodies the spirit of Morehead State,” President Morgan said. “His story is one of perseverance, excellence, and loyalty. This stadium naming is a tribute to his impact on our campus and beyond.”
