Arsenal achieve stunning 22-year first in omen Arteta will hope leads to title glory

Arsenal have replicated a feat they last achieved in 2003 courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win against Fulham.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal shortly before the hour mark at Craven Cottage in what was a sixth Premier League victory for the Gunners.

They will end the weekend top of the Premier League table, and are currently three points clear of Manchester City.

As it stands, Arsenal lead the title race as they aim to become league champions for the first time since 2004.

The win at Fulham has highlighted an encouraging similarity between their current side and the one that lifted the trophy 21 years ago.

Arsenal have not faced a single shot on target in back-to-back league matches, first West Ham and now Fulham.

This is the first time they have done so since November 2003.

Birmingham City and, funnily enough, Fulham were unable to get a shot on target against the Gunners over those two matches.

Arsenal have also become the first side in the Premier League this season to have ten different goalscorers.

Trossard has joined Viktor Gyokeres, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori on the score sheet.

Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel have also netted for Arsenal.

The only league fixture they have not scored in was their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in August.

So far, so good for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is overseeing a fourth consecutive Premier League title challenge as Arsenal head coach.

They have finished second over the past three seasons, but with six wins from eight already, it could be a different story next year.

Arsenal will be aware that a Liverpool win over Manchester United on Sunday would see the gap close to just a single point.

Two consecutive defeats for the reigning champions against Crystal Palace and Chelsea have seen them stutter in their title defence.

But Arsenal are in the driving seat, with Saturday's result at Fulham a demonstration of how they can grind out wins.

They had 20 points from their first eight matches in the 2003/04 season, a tally they are just a point behind this time around.
