Kings waive member of original Beam Team to make room for Russell Westbrook

The Sacramento Kings cut a member of the original Beam Team to make room for the addition of Russell Westbrook.

The Kings announced that they waived guard Terence Davis after beating the Los Angeles Lakers 117-116 in their preseason finale Friday at Crypto.com Arena. The move came a day after Sacramento signed Westbrook to a reported one-year, $3.6 million contract.

The roster now stands at the regular season limit of 18 as the Kings prepare to face the Phoenix Suns in their season opener Wednesday at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix. Westbrook will be part of a crowded guard rotation that includes Dennis Schroder, Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, Keon Ellis, Nique Clifford and Devin Carter.

Davis, 28, returned to Sacramento on a non-guaranteed training camp contract. Spotrac’s Keith Smith noted that Davis likely received an Exhibit 10 deal, which could allow him to play for the G League Stockton Kings.

Davis played 122 games for Sacramento over parts of four seasons. The Kings first acquired Davis in a trade with the Toronto Raptors in March 2021. He averaged 8.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 16.1 minutes per game for Sacramento while shooting 42.7% from the field and 35.7% from 3-point range.

Davis played a key role as a reserve during his first two seasons in Sacramento. He averaged 11.1 points in 21.5 minutes per game in 2020-21. He averaged 10.4 points in 17.9 minutes per game in 2021-22.

Davis was also part of the original Beam Team in 2022-23. That group won 48 games to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history after 16 consecutive losing seasons. Davis appeared in 64 games, averaging 6.7 points per game.
