Match Of The Day: Albion deserved it, says Shearer - as he hails 'clever' Welbeck

He highlighted how the hosts passed their way through Toon in midfield.

And, speaking on BBC TV’s Match Of The Day, Shearer also highlighted the “clever” finishing of two-goal Danny Welbeck.

Shearer had predicted a 1-1 draw before the game.

But he had no arguments with the final outcome as Welbeck secured a 2-1 home win.

He said: “I thought Brighton were the better team.

“Newcastle I thought were too easy to play through at times.

“Brighton found that extra man in front of the back four and Newcastle’s midfield.

“Newcastle covered 6km less ground than Brighton out of possession.

“It was unusual for Newcastle, the first goals they have conceded away from home.”

Watching Georginio Rutter send Welbeck in for the first goal, he said: “That’s a brilliant ball through and a very, very clever finish.

“It happened on a few occasions.

“There’s the midfield. They just played around them.

“The passing and movement from Brighton was excellent.”

Shearer highlighted a couple of moves which did not end in shots.

But, as Welbeck added the second goal, he said: “The movement is fantastic from Brighton. Look at Wieffer, getting into that space.

“That is such a clever finish, it really is.”
