Nottingham Forest are in the market for a new manager and have been linked with Fulham boss Marco Silva.
Fulham manager Marco Silva is one of the leading candidates to be targeted by Nottingham Forest following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Saturday afternoon.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis took fewer than 20 minutes to dismiss Postecoglou following a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground. The Premier League club sit 18th in the table after eight matches with just five points on the board.
Nuno Espirito Santo, who had a famously rocky relationship with Marinakis, had been sacked at the start of September and replaced by the former Spurs manager. Postecoglou lasted just 39 days and didn’t pick up a single win in his eight matches in charge.
Marco Silva linked with newly vacant Nottingham Forest job
A short club statement read: “Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect. The Club will make no further comment at this time.”
The BBC names Sean Dyche and Roberto Mancini as potential candidates but on Saturday reported that Silva was firmly on the ‘radar’ of Nottingham Forest and labelled him ‘the preferred option of a number of internal figures at the City Ground’.
Silva remains under contract at Craven Cottage until the end of the season but there is believed to be a ‘significant’ release clause in his contract. The Fulham boss has been outspoken with his unhappiness at a lack of transfer activity this summer and how that has made a current injury crisis even worse.
Marinakis could move for Silva having worked with the coach at Greek side Olympiacos. Silva spent just one season at the club during the 2015/16 campaign before moving to Hull City, but won the Super League that year.
Fulham manager on ‘excellent relationship’ with Marinakis
The Cottagers coach spoke to A Bola about his career so far in March and was asked about his time with Olympiacos. He said: “We had a brilliant championship. But we needed to prepare for the following season, because it would be the first time that a Greek club didn't enter the Champions League directly, and we had to play in the third qualifying round, which represented a tremendous responsibility, because being in Olympiacos would have to be synonymous with playing in the Champions League, since the local championship was almost guaranteed.
“At that point, I realized that the club wasn't performing the way I thought it should to achieve our goals, and I had a frank conversation with the club's management and the president. Marinakis, with whom I had an excellent relationship, and we continue to be very good friends.”
The Greek owner is known for his fiery relationships with managers and the outlet pressed Silva on his relationship, amid reports of a fall out back when he was working in Greece. Silva clarified: “We have an excellent relationship, and at the time, I explained to him what was happening and made the decision to leave on my own, without receiving a single penny from my last day of work.
“It was a career decision I made; the financial aspect wasn't paramount, and I must mention that I wasn't in the situation I'm in today, having just finished three years at Estoril and one at Sporting. Marinakis, he wasn't satisfied, but he understood why the situation was happening. We are close and he is a person I highly regard.”
