'Big resilience' - Hurzeler on Albion win over Newcastle and Welbeck double

And that will be a huge reason for satisfaction as Fabian Hurzeler reflects on three points from a game of three great goals.

Danny Welbeck’s expertly-taken double trumped a clever back-heel flick by his Toon counterpart Nick Woltemade.

Albion won after going 1-0 up for the first time this season and were worthy of it over the full 90 minutes.

But they had to weather a storm after Woltemade levelled – and responded with some well-constructed play which eld to Welbeck’s winner.

One of Hurzeler’s recurrent observations has been that his side have been affected by conceding a goal or suffering a setback.

I am not sure i totally agree with that. From the outside, it has felt like their problem has been dealing with expectation and being in front rather than trying to wipe out deficits.

Here, he highlighted how they kept their composure and got Mats Wieffer bearing down on goal.

Dan Burn stopped him with a superb tackle but Welbeck – who was about to be substituted – sent the loose ball curving away from Nick Pope with a crisply struck right-footer.

“We showed a big resilience so I was very impressed how we reacted to the setback,” Hurzeler said.

“In the end, it is a really good performance.

“We didn’t just show good things tactically.

“We showed good personal things and that is very important for us as a club.”

Georginio Rutter was among the players who summed up the Albion endeavour.

He was the assist provider for a déjà vu opener given the same link-up had beaten Newcastle on Tyneside on the equivalent weekend last year.

And he brought the house down late in the first half with a long chase back to not only halt Anthony Gordon but also win a goal kick.

Albion also played some very good football, especially at 0-0 and 1-0.

They invited Newcastle on to them and were as quick, crisp and accurate in their one and two-touch passing as Hurzeler would have liked.

Rutter, Yasin Ayari and Carlos Baleba were a big part of that.

Yankuba Minteh was both exciting and frustrating and Ferdi Kadioglu is starting to carve out a niche for himself by not actually having a specific niche.

That willingness to pass their way through and move Newcastle around led to Rutter sending Welbeck away for his opener.

When quizzed about his own compatriot Nick Woltemade on Friday, Hurzeler had said Newcastle’s threat was not just about him.

But it pretty much was once Bruno Guimaraes had sent an early chance wide.

Jan Paul van Hecke produced a huge display at the back with Lewis Dunk a strong presence alongside him.

It took something very special from Woltemade to beat van Hecke with a clever back heel flick and, in the minutes after that, Newcastle looked the more likely winners.

Albion’s changes in response were going to include the removal of Welbeck – but he scored with substitutes waiting on the touchline.

“Sometimes it is about timing in life and it was good timing,” Hurzeler admitted.

The resilience made that well-timed winner possible.
