Eagles vs. Vikings: The matchup
The Eagles are fighting through early-season struggles in the aftermath of a season-opening four-game winning streak, and they’re doing it with an offense and defense still not firing on all cylinders. The Super Bowl champs dropped a 21-17 contest to the Denver Broncos at home in Week 5, then made it two setbacks in a row in a matchup with their NFC East rival New York Giants (34-17) last Thursday night. The Eagles defense gave up 172 rushing yards in that one while the offense lost the turnover battle (2-0) and converted just 1-of-9 third downs.
Struggles or not, the Birds are still 1.5-point favorites going into Thursday night and a potential matchup with former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who has led the Vikings offense to a 2-1 record in three starts in place of injured starter J.J. McCarthy. That situation has a chance to change throughout the week with McCarthy back at practice following an ankle injury that sidelined him for the past three contests. In McCarthy’s absence, Wentz has guided Vikings wins over the Cincinnati Bengals (48-10) and Cleveland Browns (21-17) to keep the team’s early playoff hopes alive.
