Fans all said the same thing about Kevin Durant’s contract extension

The Houston Rockets have made a new financial commitment to Kevin Durant, and many fans immediately questioned whether that was the right move.

Durant on Sunday agreed to a two-year, $90 million extension with the Rockets, his agent told ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.

Durant, who landed with the Rockets in June via a record-setting trade, had been entering the final year of his previous contract. A report over the summer claimed Durant and Houston were not close to an extension, which led to some speculation that the 15-time All-Star could become a free agent after the season.

Instead, the Rockets signed Durant to a $90 million extension before he even played in a regular-season game for them. A lot of people think the team might wind up regretting that.

Durant took less money than he was entitled to in hopes of helping the Rockets build a championship-caliber roster around him. He also recently turned 37 and has a lengthy injury history, which is why many wonder whether he will be able to live up to a contract that pays him $45 million per year.

The Rockets traded Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in this year’s draft and five second-round picks for Durant. They did not want to give up that much to only have Durant for a season, and they clearly believe he can continue to play at an elite level.

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists across 62 games with the Phoenix Suns last season.
