Oliver Glasner tips Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton for England's World Cup squad

For just the second time in his Palace career, the 21-year-old midfielder played his third full game in a row, helping his side to a 3-3 draw against high-flying Bournemouth in a lively clash on Saturday at Selhurst Park.

The last time the Blackburn Rovers academy product played three 90 minutes in a row for Palace was almost 18 months ago.

At the end of 2024, Wharton underwent groin surgery, returning in February 2025, but saw his game time managed, regularly being withdrawn in the second half as he worked his way back to full fitness.

A concussion in the FA Cup Final saw him miss the end of the season and another England call-up, this time for the U21 European Championship.

He was again sidelined after tweaking the adductor in his right leg in late August, causing his withdrawal from the England senior squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September – his first call-up under Tuchel.

Tuchel has been a regular visitor to Selhurst Park, monitoring Wharton along with Marc Guehi and Dean Henderson.

However, after returning to fitness, Wharton was once again omitted from the most recent England squad for their friendly against Wales and World Cup qualifier against Latvia, with Tuchel admitting he wanted to stick with the same players who shone in the September international window.

Despite the setbacks, Glasner admitted that being left out of the latest squad has not affected the player and instead tipped Wharton

“He’s been excellent, but his performance against Bournemouth was no response to not being invited for England because every single game he plays excellently for us,” said Glasner.

“It was, definitely, no response and he will make his way – I’m pretty sure that he will go, if he stays fit – to the World Cup with England.”

Glasner also revealed that Wharton is focused on developing his goal-scoring prowess as he looks to add to his arsenal of skills.

“In many situations, he solved under pressure; turning and switching,” said Glasner about Wharton’s performance against Bournemouth.

“He had a good shot and this is what he can improve. He is there at the edge of the box, but it’s then about scoring goals from these positions – but he’s still a young player.
