City stayed top of Group A after beating Newcastle 7-6 on penalties in a tense tie in the North East.

Newcastle went 1-0 up after 11 minutes when Lois Joel laid a shot from outside of the box into the top corner, as the two sides met each other for the first time since 2009.

But the Toon were far from out of the woods as with the last kick of the half we pulled level through Laura Coombs and a lot of praise was given to Iman Beney, who calmly set up the shot for the City captain.

City’s fortune would continue as just moments into the second-half Yui Hasegawa fired us in front.

It was thanks to more brilliant work from Beney who made a clever reverse pass into the Japanese midfielder.

The Blues were in full motion and really had a foothold of the game on the hour mark, which was made stronger as Gracie Prior netted our third goal from a corner.

Despite a strong second 45 from City, Newcastle halved the deficit through Freya Gregory with eight minutes to play and suddenly the game really heated up.

The game really came alight and the Toon would stand strong as Shania Hayles levelled in stoppage time and it would mean we would face a penalty shoot-out to decide who would pick up the extra point.

After a tense set of penalties that saw us go as far as seven, it was Laura Blindkilde Brown who fired home the decisive penalty to earn us a bonus point.

The result means we sit top of Group A on five points, with a final game against Nottingham Forest looming. City have to win or draw against the Tricky Trees to finish top of the table and qualify for the next round.
