Harvey Elliott was an unused substitute on Sunday as Aston Villa produced an excellent performance to win 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder moved from Liverpool to Villa Park in the summer after falling down the pecking order on Merseyside. He joined on loan, although Villa do have an obligation to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Elliott has started just one Premier League game for the club so far and former Villa winger Marc Albrighton told BBC Radio WM he was expecting the 22-year-old to feature more frequently.

"He was the signing I was most excited to see," he said . "He's still got bags of ability and can come in and do a job.

"The most frustrating thing for him would have been seeing the players in front of him when they weren't performing or playing well, and him still not getting a sniff.

"It's such a long season, with Europe as well. There are going to be so many games and every player will get game time."

Unai Emery’s decision to leave Elliott on the bench ultimately proved justified, as Villa delivered a superb display to win at Spurs.

The hosts took the lead through Rodrigo Bentancur early on, but Villa hit back with two stunning goals to secure all three points. Morgan Rogers equalised with a thunderous effort before half-time, and Emi Buendia capped off a sensational move with a precise finish in the second half.

Elliott remained on the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, meaning he stays on three Premier League appearances following his summer switch.

With European fixtures and a busy festive schedule ahead, opportunities are likely to come soon for the new Villa No. 9. But with Buendia and Rogers among the goals, he may have to wait a little longer for his chance.
