Premier League explains why Man Utd goal was allowed to stand against Liverpool

The Premier League Match Centre has explained why Bryan Mbeumo's goal was allowed to stand in Liverpool's game against Manchester United.

The Reds fell behind early on at Anfield as Mbeumo fired past Giorgi Mamardashvil but the goal was not without controversy after Alexis Mac Allister picked up an injury.

The Argentine midfielder was caught by teammate Virgil van Dijk and appeared to sustain a head injury. But instead of stopping play, as is the norm in the Premier League, referee Michael Oliver let play continue.

Mbeumo capitalized to open the scoring and on Sky Sports, commentator Peter Drury said the goal was allowed to stand because Oliver didn't see Mac Allister on the ground.

Jamie Carragher offered a sarcastic reply from the Sky commentary booth, adding: "He was on the floor holding his head!"

Virgil van Dijk and Arne Slot both remonstrated with the referee and Carragher offered his own feelings on the ruling, which sees play stopped for players to receive treatment.

He added: "I have been frustrated in the past that players have taken advantage of that rule. There was an incident in the Arsenal game yesterday near the dugout and the referee pulled it back.

"I am very surprised Michael Oliver hasn't brought it back."

Alexis Mac Allister receives treatment on the ground

Manchester United's opening goal against Liverpool was shrouded in controversy after Alexis Mac Allister was suffering with a head injury in the build-up

Yet colleague Gary Neville pointed the finger at the Liverpool captain for his role in the goal as he lost Mbeumo, before he slotted into the net.

Neville said: "Mac allister goes down but what stuns me is Van Dijk. Mbeumo runs off him, he can't see him. That is the big surprise.

"Mbeumo reacts like a boxer off the ground and he is away. Mamardashvili can't keep it out, a stunning start for Manchester United."

Liverpool went into the game on the back of a three game losing run in both the Premier League and Champions League.

And with Arsenal winning at Fulham on Saturday night, the Reds could end the weekend four points adrift at the top of the table.
