Manchester United have learnt why a penalty was not awarded against them for Liverpool during Sunday's clash at Anfield.
Bryan Mbeumo put United a goal ahead after just one minute at Anfield with a fine finish to stun Arne Slot's side. However, around 20 minutes later, Liverpool's Cody Gakpo went for a cross, which hit Amad on the arm in the United area.
Huge shouts erupted from the home fans, but VAR did not award a penalty to the home team. And the Premier League's official match centre account on X (Twitter) have now revealed why no penalty was awarded to Liverpool.
"The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Amad’s arm was in a natural and justifiable position," they said in a statement.
Meanwhile, former United captain and defender Gary Neville has had his say on whether a penalty should have been awarded to the home side.
"Amad has his arm in the position that referees give penalties for," he said while commentating on Sky Sports.
"But it hits his other arm. He just needs to keep his arms down.
"He finds himself in situations he is not used to: blocking crosses."
Reacting to United's early goal on Merseyside, Neville said: "What a first minute it is for Manchester United! United fans are delirious.
"Mbeumo and Cunha connect. Mbeumo runs round the back of Van Dijk. I don't think Van Dijk sees him!
"Mbeumo is like a boxer, off he goes! A stunning start for United!"
He added: "For the goal, Van Dijk points to Konate and says: Mbeumo is yours. It's a strange handover from Van Dijk."
