Liverpool's arch-rivals jubilantly inflicted a fourth consecutive defeat on the Premier League champions as Harry Maguire struck at the death to clinch a famous victory for Manchester United.

The visitors hit the front in under two minutes through Bryan Mbeumo, though Michael Oliver's failure to stop play while Alexis Mac Allister was down with a head injury meant their was an air of controversy over the Cameroon forward's goal.

Gakpo struck the woodwork no fewer than three times as Liverpool fought to level proceedings, while Senne Lammens also stood firm in several big moments to preserve United's lead. But with time ticking away, finally, Gakpo would not be denied.

He was in the right place at the right time to divert a low cross from substitute Federico Chiesa beyond Lammens. But that only set the stage for Maguire, who netted in the 85th minute to break Liverpool hearts.

Here are Mirror Football's Liverpool ratings from the big game...

Didn't exude confidence at times. Maybe should have done better for Mbeumo's goal, where he was beaten at his near post.

Selected ahead of Szboszlai and Frimpong. Didn't do much wrong but not a display that will put pressure on his competitors, either.

Went with the runner to play Mbeumo onside for United's opener but was Liverpool's best defender in a difficult first half.

Mbuemo ghosted in behind Liverpool's captain to break the deadlock and he'll know he should have done better.

Become so influential and was a nervous moment when he went down hurt in second half. Sacrificed as Liverpool chased the game.

Steady if unspectacular outing from the Hungary star. Moved to right-back as Liverpool chased the game.

Another player struggling to hit the heights of last season. Not his finest game before being replaced.

Has been Manchester United's tormentor-in-chief down the years but not here. Spurned golden chance when firing wide at back post just after the hour. Another blank.

Liverpool's best attacker by far. Was denied the goal he deserved by the woodwork on no less than three occasions before popping up late on - then missed a sitter to level for a second time.

Slot says now is the time to judge Liverpool's record £125m signing but he failed to impress on the big stage here. Not his finest hour.

Benched for a second straight game. Wasn't quite the catalyst for a famous Liverpool comeback but got involved.

Injected some urgency into Liverpool's frontline. Can maybe feel hard done by not to start considering previous displays.

Started the season as Liverpool's forgotten man but made another major impact here by teeing up Gakpo for his initial leveller.

Late substitute as Liverpool chased the game.
