United took the lead inside two minutes when Bryan Mbemuo ran through on goal, latching onto an Amad Diallo pass, to slot past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Bruno Fernandes missed the chance to double the visitors' lead before half-time as United looked continuously dangerous on the counter-attack.
Liverpool had their chances, seeing Cody Gakpo strike the post twice, and eventually the Dutchman found the back of the net to equalise in the 78th minute.
With Liverpool in the ascendency and pushing for a go-ahead goal, Harry Maguire headed in Bruno Fernandes' cross at the back post to put United back in front.
Here, the _Daily Star Sport_ looks at the United player ratings.
**Senne Lammens:** Following his debut clean sheet against Sunderland, Lammens looks to be have taken the role of No.1 at Old Trafford. Made a smart stop to deny Alexander Isak in the first-half. **8**
**Matthijs De Ligt:** Headed and cleared everything at him while also playing out with composure. **8**
**Harry Maguire:** Picked ahead of Leny Yoro for his experience and proved why as he kept Isak incredibly quiet, seeing the British record signing replaced with Liverpool chasing an equaliser. Headed in United's winner. **9**
**Luke Shaw:** Questions have been asked of him in recent weeks about his ability to play on the left-side of the back three. **7**
**Amad Diallo:** A surprise inclusion in starting line-up at wing-back given Liverpool's attacking threat down the left with Milos Kerkez and Cody Gakpo, but he took to the task well. His threaded through pass to Mbeumo assisted Mbeumo's goal. **7**
**Bruno Fernandes:** Should have made it 2-0 when he hit the post in the first half. Appeared everywhere on the pitch. **7**
**Casemiro:** One of United's best players but was replaced shortly before 60 minutes after picking up a yellow card and getting cramp in the process. **7**
**Diogo Dalot:** Looked like he was playing in boots three sizes too big in a shaky start. Became more composed as the game went on. **7**
**Mason Mount:** Didn't steal the show with Mbeumo and Cunha catching the eye. But another solid display as his United career looks to be finally gaining momentum. **7**
**Bryan Mbeumo:** Opened the scoring with a well-taken finish and forced chances with his directness and pace. **8**
**Matheus Cunha:** Vindicated his selection with his work rate and superior technical ability. United's best attacker, danced round tackles and linked up the play brilliantly. Magic. **9**
**Manuel Ugarte:** A massive game in his United career as he looks to convince of his ability. Up against it as Slot threw on his plethora of attacking options but was a positive performance. **6**
**Patrick Dorgu:** Missed an interception to allow Mohamed Salah a chance he really should have buried just minutes after coming on but grew into the game and his role. **6**
**Benjamin Sesko:** Brought off the bench after being dropped despite scoring in successive games. Showed nice touches. **6**
**Leny Yoro:** Replaced Shaw after United retook the lead. **6**
**Kobbie Mainoo:** Came into the midfield after Maguire's goal. **6**
