'Most important thing' - Ruben Amorim names key to his 'biggest win at Manchester United'

Manchester United's gritty victory over Liverpool was Ruben Amorim's 21st since taking charge at Old Trafford.

But, perhaps more importantly, it was Amorim's 'biggest win' throughout his troubled tenure.

A late header from Harry Maguire wrapped up a 2-1 triumph for the Red Devils at Anfield after Cody Gakpo cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo's second-minute opener.

There was a tinge of controversy for Mbeumo's goal, which was scored in less than 70 seconds, as Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister was down on the turf with a head injury.

However, referee Michael Oliver did not stop play as he did not spot the injured Mac Allister before Mbeumo fired home, meaning VAR could not intervene.

For Liverpool, the result marked their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.

But for Amorim and United, they have now strung two league wins together for the first time under the 40-year-old.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Amorim barely hid his delight but also conceded his elation was likely to subside within 24 hours.

"I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United," Amorim said.

"It means a lot today, but tomorrow it won't mean a lot. It's three points and it's a good victory.

"We fought for every ball, but we lost our composure in the second half.

"The spirit was there and that is the most important thing. If you have the spirit, you can win any game."

His first back-to-back wins in the Premier League as United boss wasn't the only pleasing statistic for Amorim to come out of Sunday evening's fixture.

How win over Liverpool catapulted Amorim into elite club

It also meant the former Sporting boss became the third member of an exclusive club that includes Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte.

Thanks to the victory over Liverpool, Amorim joined Pellegrini and Conte as the only managers to have won their first two Premier League away fixtures at the reigning champions.

In just his seventh game at the helm, Amorim steered the Red Devils to a 2-1 win away to Manchester City last December.

Josko Gvardiol gave City the lead at the Etihad Stadium in the first half, but Amorim's side turned it around right at the death.

Bruno Fernandes netted a penalty in the 88th minute before Amad Diallo wrapped up the three points in second-half stoppage time.

The win over City was Amorim's fourth from his first seven games in charge across all competitions.

However, Amorim went on to taste victory just five more times in the league following the staggering chaos against their cross-town rivals.

When are the Red Devils in action next?

Yet United's woes from last season and earlier this term seem to have dissipated thanks to three wins in their last four league fixtures.

The 2-1 triumph over Liverpool also lifted the Red Devils up to 9th in the league with 13 points, just three fewer than second-placed City.

Amorim's side are next in action on Saturday at home against Brighton.
