Since scoring on its opening possession, the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense had been scuffling against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
But on second-and-5 at the Philadelphia 21-yard line with six offensive linemen on the field, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts dropped back and hit wide receiver DeVonta Smith running behind the Minnesota secondary at the Vikings 30. Smith stepped out of a tackle attempt at the 5-yard line to complete the all-Alabama connection for a 79-yard touchdown with 8:07 left in the third quarter.
The play was the longest reception of Smith’s NFL career, replacing a 63-yard touchdown much like Sunday’s score – Hurts was the quarterback and Minnesota was the opponent for the play, which came in a 34-28 victory over the Vikings on Sept. 14, 2023.

The completion was the longest for Hurts since a 91-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Quez Watkins in a 17-11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 19, 2021.
Before his touchdown reception on Sunday, Smith had five receptions in the game, but they had gained only 36 yards, and Hurts’ 10 completions had totaled 91 yards.
Smith’s second touchdown reception of 2025 was the 29th of his career in the regular season. Smith also had two postseason touchdowns since joining Philadelphia in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
