Opinion: Nick Woltemade is quickly making his own Newcastle trademark just like Alan Shearer

Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade is quickly etching his way into Magpies folklore after yet another goal in the Premier League – and he’s following in the footsteps of St. James’ Park legend Alan Shearer in the process.

Newcastle relied on their German talisman yet again to equalise against Brighton in the Premier League, scoring with just over 10 minutes to go against the Seagulls on Saturday afternoon.

Although Newcastle transpired to lose the game, it was Nick Woltemade’s brilliance that got them back into it, with his deft finish beating Bart Verbruggen all ends up on the south coast to send the travelling Magpies fans barmy.

However, Eddie Howe will take positive signs from his goal and fans will have noticed that the Germany international is making his own trademark on Tyneside, following in the ilk of club legend Alan Shearer.

Nick Woltemade’s goal for Newcastle vs Brighton is becoming a regular occurence

Nick Woltemade is an unusual profile of player. Standing at 6ft 6in, the typical expectation of a giant striker is that they are clumsy with their feet, but great in the air and physical enough to hold the ball up the pitch.

However, Woltemade has shown already for Newcastle that he’s more than capable of playing with the ball at his feet after making a £65million move from Stuttgart.

The goal against Brighton signified that. A cross fired in by teenager Lewis Miley was instinctively flicked by the giant German striker, completely wrong-footing Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal.

And it’s not the first time that the former Werder Bremen man has produced something magical. He did the same earlier this season, with Woltemade’s goal against Union Saint-Gilloise coming in similar circumstances.

It’s already becoming his trademark, and despite headers against Arsenal and Wolves in the Premier League, he’s showing that he can do both sides of the game by being a danger in the box both on the floor and aerially, with Woltemade already being called ‘brilliant’ by Shay Given.

The 23-year-old still has some way to go to beat Alan Shearer’s record for Newcastle in the Premier League.

Shearer scored 148 goals in the Premier League for the Toon, but Woltemade has started strong with four goals in five games, reminiscent of Papiss Cisse’s lightning start for Newcastle after his Bundesliga move in 2012.

However, Shearer made a name for himself with some thunderous strikes with his laces, which became his trademark finish.

A number of strikes, including a Premier League all-timer vs Everton on home turf, saw Shearer become synonymous with thumping goals, striking fear into defences across the country.

But Woltemade appears to have curated one himself, and if he can catch out Premier League goalkeepers with more flicks, it will etch him further into stardom in the North East.
