Real Madrid returned to the top of La Liga with a fraught 1-0 win over Getafe. At times, Getafe were the very definition of the low block, as they held on for dear life. Other than a few openings from Kylian Mbappe, Getafe did very well to keep Madrid at bay in what was an underwhelming spectacle in the first half. Although Getafe did enjoy some forays into the Madrid half in the second period, they quickly got 11 players behind the ball when they lost possession.
A reckless challenge Djene Dakonam gave Madrid a free kick on the edge of the Getafe box. Kylian Mbappe sent the set piece narrowly wide. His frustrated expression summed up Madrid's performance thus far. Madrid were then given a lifeline when Allan Nyom was red-carded a minute after coming on as a substitute for a needless clash with Vinicius Junior.
It got even worse for Getafe three minutes later when Mbappe opened the scoring. Arda Guler played the Frenchman the ball, Mbappe turned neatly before firing in. When Alex Sancris got a second yellow, the game was up for Getafe.
