Seven games into the Aaron Glenn tenure with the New York Jets and the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator is still winless.
The Jets played host to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and fell 13-6 in what was another dismal offensive performance.
The biggest change for the now 0-7 Jets was that Glenn finally benched starting quarterback Justin Fields as his play continued to falter.
The former Ohio State quarterback began the game 6-of-12 for 46 yards while the offense could only muster a field goal in the first half. Given the Jets haven’t scored a first-half touchdown since Week 1, a change has desperately been needed.
Glenn finally made the decision for the Jets’ first possession of the second half, sending out veteran Tyrod Taylor at quarterback instead of Fields.
There have been questions as to whether Fields should’ve even started after posting a 35.5 QBR with 799 passing yards in his first five games. Glenn even fielded a question after last week’s loss about if it was time to consider a change.
He met the question with great disdain following the team’s 13-11 loss to the Denver Broncos.
“Come on, man. What kind of question is that?” Glenn said. “There’s a number of guys, sometimes this league is like this and there are guys that have bad games. That doesn’t mean you just bench him. Come on, you know better than that.”
Fields only last 30 more minutes of football before Glenn pulled the plug.
Even with the defense keeping the Panthers within striking distance, the offense never managed to get into the end zone with Taylor running the unit and he threw a pair of interceptions on the team’s longest drives of the game.
In total, the Jets amassed 220 yards of offense, averaging 3.7 yards per play and failing to find the end zone at all for the second straight game.
Glenn had already set franchise history becoming the first Jets coach to start 0-5 in his debut season. Former coaches Lou Holtz and Adam Gase each began their stints 0-4 and didn’t make it to a second season.
Now the Jets remain the only winless team in the NFL without any clear indications that a win will come anytime soon.
